As travelers and digital nomads, we like to always be exploring. Potsdam may not be the first city that comes to mind when planning your trip to Germany. However, with stunning sites, lovely culture, and new coworking spaces popping up all the time, Potsdam should be added to any German itinerary.

Why Potsdam

Potsdam embodies what it means to be a small city that feels big, being easy to walk and explore while not feeling tired or cramped. It has culture and attractions, home to an UNESCO World Heritage site, which invites all kinds of travelers to it neighborhood. However, there’s also a noticeable lack of pressure to go, go, go. That kind of balance makes it a perfect getaway for anyone wanting to relax for a day, see some sights, and escape the noise of the bigger cities like Berlin.

Charming cafes with reliable Wi-Fi, new coworking spaces, and stunning French castles make for a pretty rad office for the day too.

Top Attractions for Digital Nomads and Travelers

Here’s a list of all the cool attractions Potsdam has to offer its visitors, tourists and digital nomads alike.

·       Sans Souci Park and Palace:

“Without a Care.” The literal English translation of the French-named Sans Souci Palace, which is appropriate because it’s hard to worry in a place like this. Once the summer home to Frederick the Great, the former king of Prussia, this palace is breathtaking. A beautiful cascading garden covers the South side of the grounds, with marble statutes placed throughout to make it seem like an elegant, timeless garden party is taking place.

Enjoy the palace grounds free of charge. If you feel like it you have the option to make a donation to help cover the garden’s upkeep.

·      Dutch Quarter :

Instantly transport yourself to the Netherlands by visiting the Dutch Quarter. If this neighborhood were to be summed up with one word it would have to be… charming. The people are incredibly friendly, and the vibrant atmosphere welcomes a creative crowd.

Take a lovely stroll to observe the Dutch-style architecture and peruse the local shops and galleries. Or, if you need to get some work done, you can set up shop at one of the dozens of cafes and have an elegant backdrop that’ll make all your coworkers jealous.

·      Filmmuseum Potsdam & Babelsberg Film Studio:

Living in Los Angeles I’m no stranger to film lots, but even I was impressed by this studio. Babelsberg Film Studio is the world’s oldest large-scale film studio and has a truly interesting history. Some of the world’s finest directors have utilized the space, and during World War II the studio was used as a propaganda machine, a past that they aren’t proud of but recognize. The film museum offers stunning architecture and an in-depth look at the history of cinema and the movie-making process. If you're a fan on silver screen then these stops make for a fun way to spend an afternoon.

·      The Potsdam Brandenburg Gate:

While smaller than Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, the Potsdam archway is no less impressive, signifying the entrance to the city and the Potsdam Promenade. Surrounded by cafes and shops, this town center feels warm and welcoming.

Living and Working in Potsdam

Potsdam is no stranger to coworking spaces too. For remote workers and digital nomads looking to maintain productivity can find rentable office spaces throughout the town and adjacent neighborhoods.

Coworking resources like SimpliOffice and Unicorn offer affordable, temporary work environments that make it simple to carve out productive space. Local hotels offer in house business centers and suites will equipment and tables long enough to host a conference should the need arise.

Cuisine and Dining

Potsdam has several different cuisines to choose from, including Italian, Mediterranean, and Dutch but the most prominent is German. There are German cafes in every direction, each boasting about their own brands of chocolates, bratwurst, and beer.

Connectivity and Community

Potsdam has reliable internet and finding public hotspots for free Wi-Fi is simple. Remote workers and digital nomads won’t have a hard time staying connected digitally.

It’s also easy to stay connected in the physical world with the use of efficient public transportation, which makes it easy to commute to and from Berlin if need be. Driving in Potsdam is easy, though the older, cobblestone roads may make it a little more challenging at times. (As an American I appreciated driving on the same side of the road as I was used to.)

Networking opportunities vary in Potsdam, with the easiest ones found at cafes and coworking spaces. German culture prioritizes efficiency so if you’re looking to meet other people at cafes make sure not to be too intrusive and speak efficiently with a goal in mind. That’s not to say that the people aren’t friendly, because they are, but just make sure you’re respectful of their time and boundaries.

Better Balance

Potsdam's unique blend of historical charm, modern conveniences, and natural beauty offer an enriching experience for any type of traveler. For digital nomads Potsdam can serve as a potential temporary home away from home, offering a better balance between responsibilities and leisure (which was the town’s founding principle).

Give Potsdam a try next time you’re in Germany, a not so hidden, hidden gem.
